The Arch Workbench of FreeCAD implements a series of tools and facilities for BIM modeling. This extra information permits all kinds of advanced analysis of the model, such as structural resistance, cost and construction time estimations, or calculations of energy consumption. ![]() BIM models are usually based on 3D models, and also include a series of additional layers of information, such as materials information, relationships to other objects or models, or special instructions for building or maintenance. The exact definition of what it is varies, but we can simply say that it is how buildings and other large structures like bridges, tunnels, etc. In the future, for me, if Sketchup will fall short (which has never happened), FreeCAD might be one of my top choices.BIM stands for Building Information Modeling. I still prefer my Sketchup workflow a lot more, but I see much potential in FreeCAD. Sketches for Sketchup using Sketchup intuitive methods of drawing/modelling along with the parametric rules of FreeCAD sketches would be a dream.įreeCAD has some incumbrances, mainly in it’s lack of ability to texture materials nicely, the difficulty on generating terrains, the unintuitive modelling workflows and somewhat basic support for 2D layouts. ![]() I’m waiting to see how we can author Live components, but if I was to call the shots I would push Trimble to get inspired in Sketches for an UI/UX. Sketches are what I think a visual parametric system for architects should be. You can have a fully parametric workflow with it and I started experimenting that here: ![]() What I think is the best thing about it is parametrics. I’ve tried it but real life took over and I am now waiting for an opportuinity to pursue my investigation on it.
